Setup Instructions:

To perform this assignment, students must first install Kali Linux on a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox.

 Step 1: Install VirtualBox

👉 Download: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Step 2: Download Kali Linux

Recommended: Kali VirtualBox image for quick setup

👉 Download: https://www.kali.org/get-kali/#kali-virtual-machines

Default Login for Kali Linux

  • Username: kali
  • Password: kali

Assignment Tasks:

Step 1: Find the target IP (Reconnaissance)

            Open your terminal and run:

nslookup scanme.nmap.org (Returns the IP of the given domain)

Step 2: Run the required nmap scan and save the output in a text file (file name with your VU ID)

Run this command:

nmap -sV -p 22,80,443 <Target_IP_Address> -oN bc11223344.txt

Note:

Replace <Target_IP_Address> with the IP address returned from step 1.

Replace bc11223344.txt with your own VU ID filename.

Step 3: Display the scan output (using the cat command)

            cat bc11223344.txt

Note: Replace bc11223344.txt with the actual file name (your VU ID) saved in Step 2.

How to submit the assignment solution:

Submit an MS Word document (.doc or .docx) containing only two screenshots showing:

  • Output of the nslookup command and output of the nmap scan showing open ports and running services
  • Output of the Cat command showing the contents of the txt file saved in step 2

Note: Replace bc11223344 with your actual VU ID. If two submissions have the same ID, zero marks will be awarded to both students.
